Initial Concepts


To start off my character and creature concepts I stuck to pen and paper in order to keep iterations quick and to stop myself from getting too attached to a drawing.

 This wasn't to take anything to a final stage, it was more just experimenting in order to get a further idea of what I wanted to create.


From this, I went on to photobashing a head to try and create a face which I felt worked with my idea. I edited photos rather than starting from scratch as it allowed quicker iterations with better quality results.

Above are the original images I used to paint over.


I tried keeping the image I had in my mind whilst creating these, but also wanted to have enough variety to choose from. My favourite from this was the top right face. I then went on to use this when creating my sculpt.

Morph Target Practice In order to find out if the my idea for my project would be feasible, and to understand the process of animating the morph targets on my character, I carried out a basic test in Unreal Engine 4. Firstly, I created a deformed variation of my model in ZBrush using the same mesh, so it had the same geometry and UVs. I then exported both the high and low poly models of the man and deformed man, then imported them into 3DS Max. I used the Morpher modifier in Max to pick the deformed mesh for my model to morph into. I then exported the original male mesh ready for use in Unreal. Inside Unreal Engine, I used the Normal maps for both of the models, which I had previously baked in Substance Painter, and set them up to blend in a material. Hyde Texture Start

Hyde Texture Start After the sculpt was finalised, it was just a case of redoing the UVs for Hyde's head and hand and mouth, as the geometry was all the same, then baking and texturing in Substance Painter. For the skin, I used the same methods and techniques that I employed with Jekyll. For reference, I found that elderly people's faces offered really good details and colour information that worked well with the look I was after.

Final Year Project Idea For this 12 week project I intend to produce a full game-ready, realistic character implemented in Unreal engine 4 using the PBR pipeline. The inspiration of my piece will be taken from Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde as I aim to produce a character who changes their features into something beastly. My main inspirations for this piece so far are examples such as 'The Order: 1886' Lycan transformation, 'The Wolfman'(2010) VFX breakdown and the real-time werewolf transformation by  YOSUKE ISHIKAWA Although a lot of my inspirations come from werewolf transformations, I aim to stray away from making Lycan or Werewolf features and try to make something more unique.
